Semifinalists spotted

BOL (Croatia) May 3. American Samantha Reeves reached her first WTA semifinals on Friday when Gala Leon Garcia of Spain retired with back pain in the Croatian Bol Ladies Open.

Reeves was leading their quarterfinal 7-6 (3), 3-0 when Leon Garcia felt the consequences of a tough second-round match on Thursday, when she ousted top-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.

Reeves, ranked 123rd, will face third-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia — the only remaining seed — in Saturday's semifinals. The other will be an all-Spanish affair between Conchita Martinez Granados and Maria Sanchez Lorenzo.

Zvonareva, ranked 28th, took only 38 minutes to defeat Ludmila Cervanova of Slovakia 6-1, 6-1.

Martinez Granados overcame Tathiana Garbin 7-5, 7-6 (4).

Garbin, who'd beaten Italian compatriot fifth-seeded Rita Grande, led 5-3 in the second set against Martinez Granados.

The results: quarterfinals: Samantha Reeves bt Gala Leon Garcia 7-6 (3), 3-0, retired; Conchita Martinez Granados bt Tathiana Garbin 7-5, 7-6 (4); Maria Sanchez Lorenzo bt Silvija Talaja 7-5, 7-6 (6); Vera Zvonareva bt Ludmila Cervanova 6-1, 6-1. — AP
