Maharashtra releases water

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELGAUM MAY 3. Maharashtra, on Friday, released 150 million cubic feet of water from the Rajapur Dam into the Krishna river. This will benefit villages in Athani taluk, which have been reeling under an acute shortage of water for several weeks now. The water will reach Athani taluk by Saturday night.

The release is a gesture of reciprocation by Maharashtra since Karnataka has released an equal amount of water from the Alamatti Dam to Maharashtra. The Deputy Commissioner, B.S. Palaksha, said that the State Government had already cleared Rs. 2 crore of the Rs. 3.95 crore due to Maharashtra as water charges. Mr. Palaksha urged farmers not to use the water for irrigation since it was meant only for drinking.
