Death anniversary of Tipu Sultan

By Our Staff Correspondent

Mysore May 3. The 204th death anniversary of Tipu Sultan will be observed at Srirangapatna on Sunday. The legendary ruler, also known as the Tiger of Mysore, lost his life battling the British on May 4, 1799 in the fourth Mysore war. A procession will be taken out in the ancient town which was the capital of Tipu Sultan. After his death, the capital city was shifted to Mysore.

The procession will be followed by a public meeting to be inaugurated by Sri Veerabhadra Channamalla Swamiji of Nidumamidi Math. Prominent among those attending the function include well-known columnist and thinker Asghar Ali Engineer, the KRRS leader, K.S. Puttanaiah, and Devanoor Mahadev.

The public meeting will also underline communal harmony, and many youth organisations in Mysore, Nanjangud, and other places have expressed their support to it.

The liberal and progressive groups have extended their support to the rally following remarks by the BJP leader, D.H. Shankaramurthy, who had dubbed Tipu Sultan communal.
