Trade unions call for strike

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE MAY 3. The CITU President, K.E. Balanandan, today said that trade unions all over the country would observe a day's strike on May 21 in protest against the economic policies of the Union Government.

Addressing presspersons here, he said the Centre was implementing policies "dictated'' by agencies such as the World Bank, IMF, and WTO. The World Bank dictated policies restricted the economic freedom and sovereignty of the country, he added.

Trade unions had decided to call for a strike to oppose the privatisation of profit making and economically viable public sector units (PSUs), removal of quantitative restrictions on imports, and amendments to labour laws, and demand a comprehensive legislation to give social security to farm labourers.
