Addressing a press conference here, the BJP leader alleged that the Government was being partial in dealing with the situation. The police had taken the victims of the attack into custody. He added that inquiries by the local police had lost credibility owing to political interference. If such political interference could not be prevented, the investigation should be entrusted to the Central Bureau of Investigation. Mr. Mukundan said that a report in the mouthpiece of the Indian Union Muslim League, `Chandrika', had described the incident as a clash. This raised doubts whether the ruling party had a role in the incident. The Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, too was siding with the attackers by stating that the attack was a continuation of earlier incidents. He said that the present situation had arisen because of the communal appeasement policies of the Government in the past. The distribution of `thrisuls' by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had nothing to do with the communal flare-up. Mr. Mukundan said that a three-member team of the BJP would conduct an inquiry into the incident. The Central leadership of the party had also been requested to send its representatives to visit Marad.
