With reference to a news report `Eat papaya and tulsi to ward off SARS, says Jayalalithaa', published on May 1, the Health Minister, S. Semmalai writes: ``The SARS epidemic has caused much agitation and fear in the public mind and the Government of Tamil Nadu's machinery has been fully geared up to meet the disease by a surveillance and immediate response mechanism. Outlining the steps taken by the Government to tackle the theat, our beloved leader made a statement on the Floor of the House to allay fears about SARS and to explain to the public how the infection is spread. While this was so, The Hindu has sought to misreport what was stated and has adopted a derogatory and denigratory tone in the report. Our leader clarified on the basis of confirmed information that the disease was spread through saliva, whereas your correspondent has used the words `by saliva and by air', which our leader never stated''.
