`Prevent child marriage'

By Our Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI MAY 3. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has asked the State Governments to gear up to prevent child marriages from taking place tomorrow on the occasion of "akha teej" — believed to be an auspicious day for conducting marriages.

The commission has also asked the State Women's Commissions and the non-governmental organisations working in the area of women's welfare to focus on the issue of child marriage in the week coinciding with the function.

The Human Resource Development and the Rural Development Ministry have been asked to ensure participation by anganwadi workers and gram panchayats in the campaign to stop child marriage. The Members of Parliament and NCW members from the States concerned have also been asked to ensure that such marriages do not take place, the commission's press release said here today.
