Decks cleared for Dora to take over

By Our Sports Reporter

HYDERABAD MAY 3. It is now almost certain that H.J. Dora, Commissioner of the Central Vigilance Commission, will be unanimously elected president of the Weightlifting Federation of India (WFI) at its annual general body meeting to be held here on Sunday.

Though there are quite a few contenders for other key positions like the secretary's post, the different groups hold the opinion that in view of Mr. Dora's stature there should not be any contest against him.

For the elections the IOA observer is Ajay Sarnaik, associate vice-president of IOA, and K. Murugan, senior vice-president of IOA, will preside over the meeting.

Sources in the WFI also revealed that it had been verified from the Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs that there had not been any communication declaring Balbir Singh Bhatia persona non-grata.

Mr. Bhatia himself refused to speak on the subject except to say that he would return to Delhi and reveal to the media all the details about the controversy.

More importantly, there appears to be confusion about the Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sanamacha Chanu having tested positive as there is another Chanu in the Sports Authority of India record books who had tested positive for doping.

"This is a clear case of mistaken identity,'' the sources said.
