Doctors caution against radial artery angiogram

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD May 3. Doctors from the CARE Hospital have decried publicity being given to angiograms and angioplasties being done from the hand (radial artery) rather than from the leg (femoral artery).

Cautioning against indiscriminate use of radial artery for angiogram, the senior consultant cardiologists at the hospital, B. Somaraju and Sunil K. Kapoor, said it can lead to radial artery injury, which could lead to damaging the radial artery in the patient. A study in Japan as reported in April issue of Journal of American College of Cardiology showed that injury to the radial artery can occur in 48 out of 100 patients due to radial artery angiogram.

Dr. Somaraju said they had thought it was their duty as an experienced team of cardiologists doing angiograms and angioplasties in the State for the last 17 years to caution physicians, cardiologists and the public not to be misled by the campaign.
