Letters to the Editor
Sir, Sriharikota is known as `Space Port' from where satellites are launched. Hundreds of engineers and scientists work there. During the launching of PSLV and GSLV, many engineers/scientists from several places visit this place. The authorities in Sriharikota struggle to arrange transportation for these people from Chennai and Nellore. The Central Government and the Andhra Pradesh Government have done precious little for the development of this important place. Sullurpet, a small town on the mainland, the only road and railhead, is more of a bottleneck for reaching this island. Though the Railways may have many reasons for not stopping many of the long-distance trains in Sullurpet, they have not provided even the computerised reservation facility here for the convenience of people boarding trains at Chennai or Nellore. It would be good if the Government departments come forward and provide a four-lane road connecting Sriharikota to the national highway, a computerised railway reservation facility, direct trains from Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai and Ahmedabad and frequent bus services to Chennai, Nellore and Tirupati.
