The second batch of the diploma course offered by the IICT in collaboration with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) commences on June 25. So far, more than 200 aspirants have applied for the course which has only 24 seats, 18 in the open category and six reserved for industry-sponsored candidates. According to course coordinator, U.S.N. Murthy, the 18-week course comprising 13 modules and an industry-relevant project, aims at underscoring the importance of rapid access to scientific information. The hands-on sessions on Param Super Computer would help the students enjoy the benefits of high performance computing. The first batch was completed around January and Dr. Murthy said that most of the students found good placement. "One of the students mailed me yesterday saying she landed a lucrative offer of Rs. 5.80 lakhs per annum from a leading pharmaceutical company,'' he said. The recent times has seen a spurt in Bioinformatics resulting in rapid increase in the biological database which could be accessed easily by a Super Computer and not the smaller systems that are commonly used, Dr. Murthy said.
