Episcopal jubilee of Mathews II begins today

KOTTAYAM May 14. The year-long celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the Episcopal ordination of Baselius Marthoma Mathews II, Catholicos of the East and supreme head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, begins here on Thursday.

According to organisers, the day will begin with a special Kurbana at the Mar Elia Cathedral here. This will be followed by the visit of the Catholicos to Karunya Nilayam, a home for the poor and needy patients who are undergoing treatment in the Kottayam Medical College Hospital. The Catholicos will share the lunch with the inmates. The high point of the day's celebration will be a public rally being organised in connection with the journey of the Catholicos from Gandhi Square to the venue at Mar Elia Cathedral.

This will be followed by a public reception for the Catholicos. The Meghalaya Governor, M.M. Jacob, will inaugurate the meeting. P.C. Alexander, MP, will deliver the keynote address. The launching of the welfare programmes given shape by the Church in connection with the jubilee celebrations will be done by the Indian Union Muslim League State president, Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal.

The beneficiaries for the welfare programmes will be selected without any consideration for caste, religion or political affiliation, the organisers said.

The projects include housing for the socially and financially backward sections, assistance for marriage of girls from poor families, rehabilitation of the mentally challenged and programmes for employment generation.

The Mar Thoma Metropolitan, Philipose Mar Chrisostum, the Ministers, R. Balakrishna Pillai and K.M. Mani, K. Suresh Kurup, MP, Oommen Chandy, Mercy Ravi and Joseph M. Puthussery, MLAs, and the Kerala Congress(J) chief, P.J. Joseph, will extend facilitations.
