He said the KIOCL was important for the sustenance of the New Mangalore Port (NMP) and it must be developed without causing too much damage to the region's ecology. Speaking at a function organised by the ONGC to mark the arrival of its first overseas equity crude here on Thursday, Mr. Krishna said KIOCL would not only benefit Dakshina Kannada, but also the whole of Karnataka. The State's patronage to the NMP would also help the local economy. Referring to the Union Minister for Petroleum, Ram Naik's request for tax concessions for the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd., Mr. Krishna said he would discuss the matter with the officials concerned. He urged the MRPL authorities to rehabilitate the remaining project evictees. Mr. Naik had earlier urged Mr. Krishna to scrap the entry tax on crude oil the 3.69 MMTPA Phase-I of the MRPL refinery paid at the rate of 2 per cent of the cost of the consignment, which was around Rs. 40 crore a year. The minister told Mr. Krishna that the tax on crude oil, the basic raw material in a refinery, affected MRPL's finances. Mr. Naik said the tax reduced the competitiveness of MRPL's products in India and abroad. He also requested Mr. Krishna to withdraw the resale tax levied on the local purchase of petrol and diesel from MRPL. He said a surcharge was levied on consumers in Karnataka due to the tax. If this tax was scrapped, retail prices of fuel would come down slightly in the State. The Union Minister for Urban Development, Ananth Kumar, said the ONGC, through its Sudanese venture, had ensured that oil flowed from the land of the Nile to the Nethravathi. He urged the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, to consider the State's proposal to set up an SEZ in Mangalore. He said the State Government had cleared the decks for the construction of a state-of-the-art airport at Bajpe near here by acquiring land and handing it over to the Airport Authority of India. The new, realigned 9,000-ft runway would accommodate wide-bodied jets and would help Mangalore become an export hub in the region, he said. The Sudanese Ambassador, Abdal Mahmood Abdal Haleem, hailed an agreement between his country and India regarding ONGC's equity share in the Greater Nile Oil Project. The Union Minister of State for Petroleum, Santosh Kumar Gangwar, said ONGC's Sudanese venture had enhanced India's position in hydrocarbon exploration. He said even a slight increase in the production of crude would help India reduce its imports bill.
