Better ways of marketing should be thought of. Countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia were entering the tea sector in a big way and Cambodia was emerging a serious competitor, the Governor said. Pointing out that the Government was slowly withdrawing from various commerce-related activities, he said it needed to concentrate on fundamental duties such as maintenance of law and order. "Economic activities are not in the Government's domain." Referring to the multicrore horticulture park taking shape here, he said in course of time, "it will completely transform the district's economy." The potential for cultivation of herbal and medicinal plants, if harnessed properly, would make the place prosperous. The Agriculture Minister, R.Jeevanantham, the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, was taking steps to tackle the problems of the tea growers. The Tourism Minister, A.Miller, said tourism development was now getting due importance. While development of Mamallapuram had been taken up as a mega scheme under the Centre's revised policy, the Nilgiris would soon be covered by a similar scheme.
