Andaman support for CM stand against Central notification

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI May 17 . The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's demand for repeal of a recent Union Environment Ministry notification, which abrogated some of the powers of the States, has received support from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration.

In a reply to Ms. Jayalalithaa's letters (which she shot off to the Chief Ministers of coastal States and the administrators of Dadra and Nagarhaveli and Lakshadweep), N.N. Jha, Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar, said the Island chain comprised 570 islands, and islets with huge coastal zones.

The restrictions imposed under the coastal regulation zone notification affected "our developmental efforts in general and tourism-related activities in particular... The existing CRZ notification, if strictly followed, will not provide adequate space for developmental activities and the islands need to be given a special dispensation.

This administration has been projecting this fact to the Government of India for remedial measures and we are hopeful of a positive outcome," said Mr. Jha.
