By Our Special Correspondent
In a statement today, he said the Government had issued an advertisement inviting applications for appointment to the posts of first class judicial magistrate, with a clause that the candidates should be in the age group 25-38 for all categories. The advertisements did not contain any reference to normal age relaxations allowed for the backward, most backward, denotified communities and SC/STs. Thus, the chances of these backward and oppressed communities entering judicial service were sealed. Mr. Elangovan said the Government's contention that the recruitment norms had been fixed as per a High Court order was unacceptable. It should have appealed against the order, if it was keen on protecting the interests of these communities. "Is it not reasonable to ask why the Government had failed to go in appeal against the High Court order on the age of recruits to the judiciary?" The Government's "failure" showed it was not interested in the welfare of the oppressed communities, he said.
