Sir, On May 14 , the Rehabilitation and Resettlement committee, a sub-group of the Narmada Control Authority (NCA) gave its conditional recommendations to further raise the height of the Sardar Sarovar project, from 95 to 100 metres. The meetings of the NCA were timed just after the Supreme Court went on an extended summer vacation from May 12, thereby making it difficult for the people of the valley to appeal to the court. This has now become a pretty obvious pattern for two years in a row. The NCA followed a similar procedure in May 2002, and conducted a meeting to raise the dam height from 90-95 metres. Meanwhile, over 3600 families in Maharashtra and many more in Madhya Pradesh, who were displaced, are still awaiting the promised compensation and resettlement from their respective governments.
