Padma awards

Sir, — This refers to the news report `Padma awards as titles' ( June 4 ). The awards cannot be used or misused in any manner as alleged in the item as it cannot be pledged for monetary gain or otherwise. I also received such a letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs. There is no use blaming public organisers for advertising their programme with `Padma Awards titles'.

Absolutely it will not give them any gain or uplift them in any manner. Almost all artistes, and others have printed the title of the awards they have received on their letterheads, so why blame the organisers?

The Government has suddenly woken up to circulate the order of the Supreme Court of 1995. During the British rule, the Government used to honour people with titles such as Rao Sahib, Rao Bahadur, Dewan Bahadur and Sikt, and those honoured used them on their letterheads and official papers. There is no point in asking people to desist from using the awards and the Government would do well to approach the Supreme Court to permit these as `titles', otherwise there is no use getting these awards.

N.P. Seshadri,
New Delhi
