Dowry and grooms

Sir, — It was Nisha Sharma of Delhi, who created history by walking out of a marriage pandal protesting dowry demand. Now another courageous girl, Vidya , of Chennai, has acted. The only law that mostly remained on the statute book is the one relating to dowry. This is because the parents of brides are not able to detect the designs of the boy or his parents, before marriage or because they are helpless afterwards. It is a good sign that girls like Nisha and Vidya have spoken out. More should take recourse under the law once the intentions of grooms become clear. Only then will dowry be eliminated.
