The rain Gods showered their benevolence on the northeast with the southwest monsoon arriving first in this region instead of the usual Kerala coast. ``Silchar and Tejpur recorded five cm rainfall during the last 24 hours,'' the Deputy Director-General of India Meteorological Department, S.K. Subramanian, said. The fortunes of the region are expected to improve in the coming days. If the monsoon has arrived in the northeast, Kerala is not far behind. The Arabian Sea branch of the monsoon has also advanced northwards. ``These conditions are favourable for the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala around June 8-10, more than a week behind schedule.'' The Bay of Bengal branch of the monsoon, which brings rain to the northeast, is more active this year than the Arabian Sea branch, which arrives in Kerala, according to MET officials in Assam. UNI
