Letters to the Editor
Sir, With the Centre trying to evolve a consensus over sending troops to Iraq, political parties continue to have differences over the issue. Whatever be the outcome, parties should not forget that this is an international issue. The U.S.' justification that every country should have a role to play in post-war Iraq shows that it wants to give a multinational face to the reconstruction of the country. India must get the U.N. to approve the measure before despatching troops.
M. Qamar Malik,
Sir, The U.S. is now courting India with unusual solicitude for our co-operation in Iraq. This rare opportunity should be put to good use. The issue is not a bilateral one between India and the U.S., but an international one where we happen to be uniquely placed. We must ensure that the U.S. returns the favour in an international issue of importance to us. The U.S. is the only Western power which has refused to support India's permanent membership of the U.N. Security Council. India should prevail upon the U.S. for a categorical declaration supporting us on this issue of long-term importance to us. The Opposition parties should not let the Government settle for less.
P. Zachariah,
