'Opening up farm sector will hit developing countries'

Sharm-El-Sheikh (Egypt) June 21. India today warned developed countries at the WTO mini-Ministerial meeting that throwing open markets in the agriculture sector might have serious economic consequences for developing countries where a majority of the population depended on it. At an informal meeting of Trade Ministers of 30 countries, the Commerce and Industry Minister, Arun Jaitley, said "the developed countries should temper their ambition in the agriculture sector with realism". The meet is the precursor to the Cancun Ministerial meet to be held in September.

"The issue of agreement on agriculture and market access has serious economic consequences, political sensitiveness and social ramification.''
