BEIJING: China has arrested a lawyer helping residents in a compensation case on charges of illegally obtaining state secrets, a human rights group reported. Zheng Enchong had been advising more than 2,000 Shanghai householders suing the developer, Chau Ching-ngai, for allegedly providing inadequate housing in exchange for their old homes. Since his initial detention on June 6, Mr. Zheng's home has been searched at least twice, New York-based Human Rights in China said in a news release issued late on Friday. Police told Mr. Zheng's wife, Jiang Meili, not to discuss his case with foreign media or groups from outside China, it said. Residents being advised by Mr. Zheng claimed the charges are part of a campaign of intimidation to prevent them pursuing the case against Mr. Chau and Government officials they alleged colluded with him.
