India, China should learn from history: Vajpayee

BEIJING June 2 1. India and China should draw on lessons of the past to avoid tensions in future, the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, said in an interview broadcast today, a day before he arrives in China on a six-day visit.

"We should take history as a mirror instead of being burdened by it," the state CCTV quoted Mr. Vajpayee as saying before the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the world's most populous country in a decade.

"The establishment of a strong and lasting partnership between India and China will be helpful for the world's peace and stability."

India hoped to resolve long-standing border issues with China and strengthen trade relations during the trip, CCTV said.
