Confession through `torture'

Bali (Indonesia): The alleged operations chief of the Jemaah Islamiyah terror group told a court on Monday that police tortured him into signing a confession that he planned last year's Bali bombings. Ali Ghufron; one of the three suspected Jemaah Islamiyah members on trial for the Oct. 12 attack — said officers beat him 20 times and threatened to send a photograph of his bruised penis to his wife unless he confessed. ``I experienced extraordinary torture ... uncivilised mental and physical pressure,'' Mr. Ghufron, alias Mukhlas, said in a written statement. ``I initially refused to sign the confession presented by the police. But later, I agreed because I could no longer stand all the torture.'' — AP
