By V.S. Sambandan
The police inspector, Sunil Thabrew (40), attached to the Terrorist Investigation Department, was shot dead at 10.15 a.m. by a Tamil "police informant", Madan Kumar (20), who had access to the barracks. The latter reportedly bit a cyanide capsule when apprehended at an Army checkpoint, but has survived. The killer walked into the barracks in Dehiwela, a Colombo suburb, met an inspector investigating terrorist activities and went away only to return at 10.15 a.m. Thabrew was reportedly resting when the shooting took place. Years of marking time as an informant apparently had paved an easy way for Madan Kumar to his target. He was reportedly taken in by the police a couple of years ago in a northern Vavuniya town, and had subsequently turned "informer".
