Level crossings should go: consumer council

By Our Staff Reporter

ELURU JULY 8. The Eluru Consumers' Council has requested Railway authorities to reduce the number of level crossings which were responsible for traffic bottlenecks in the town.

In a memorandum submitted to the Union Minister of State for Railways, Bandaru Dattatreya, the council said flyovers or subways could be constructed depending on technical feasibility and the level crossings done away with.

The council president, K. Rama Rao, said the development of the district headquarters town was greatly hampered by the railway line that passed right through the centre of the town. The five level crossings in various areas were causing frequent disruption of road traffic, he explained.

The council also highlighted the need for the railway top brass to entrust reservation of tickets to private agencies so that people living in the town need not travel all the way to the main railway station situated three km away.

It said the number run over cases was on the rise as the platforms were at a much lower level than the steps of the bogeys.

The council expressed said the Powerpet railway station was being poorly maintained. The passengers' waiting hall had become a dwelling place for beggars, drunkards and anti-social elements, it said.

It also sought rail connectivity between Eluru and Kaikalur. The extension of the railway line by 25 km towards Kaikalur would help passengers in and around the district headquarters travelling to Bhimavaram and Gudivada.
