Harikrishnan eases into second round

BANGKOK JULY 8. India's National champion V. Harikrishnan stormed into the second round of the 12th World amateur boxing championship here, defeating Chiang Tzu-wei of Taiwan.

The 22-year-old Railways boxer from Chennai got past Tzu-wei with the referee stopping the contest in their light-welterweight (64-kg) first round bout.

Harikrishnan had reached the quarterfinals of the junior World championships in 2000.

In another first round bout in the flyweight (51-kg) category, India's Akhil Kumar, also of Railways, went down to Georgy Balakshin of Russia 16-26.

Meanwhile, defending light welterweight champion Nurzhan Karimzhanov of Kazakhstan smashed past Czech Martin Halas in other first round competition at the Nimibutr Gymnasium.

Karimzhanov, who picked up a gold at the Sydney Olympics and 2002 Asian Games, dominated from the start against the less-experienced Halas on way to a 25-7 victory.

On Wednesday, the Kazakh champ faces Thailand's Manus Boonjamnong, who vanquished Mongolia's Bayanmunkh Bayanjargal 22-10.

``I saw him fight before my match and I don't think he is unbeatable,'' the 23-year-old Thai said of Karimzhanov. Manus won the bronze medal in the 2002 Asian Games.

Thai flyweight Somjitr Jongjohor, the 2002 Asian Games gold medallist, rebounded from a shaky start in his opening match against Turkey's Ramazan Ballioglu before prevailing.

``I didn't perform the way I wanted to in the first match, but luckily my opponent was not too tough. I have to do a lot better when I meet Cuban or Kazakh fighters who are a lot tougher,'' said Somjitr. He meets Bato-Munko Vankeev of Belarus in the next round.

Russian boxers proved strong, sealing first round victories in convincing fashion. Featherweight Alexzi Tishzhko advanced with a Referee Stopped Contest (RSC) second round decision over Macau's Chong Lat Chi.

Tishzhko's countryman, Aleksandr Povetkin, eased past Ukraine's Dzhamal Medzhydov with yet another second round RSC verdict in the super heavyweight class.

More than 300 boxers from about 60 countries are competing in the
