Olympic berth — the main target

By Our Special Correspondent

KOLKATA JULY 8. India will be sending eight archers, including three rookies, to the 42nd World outdoor target archery championship, to be held in New York from July 15 to 20. The team is high on confidence and aims to land Athens Olympic berths.

A mixture of youth and experience, the four men and as many women are expected to clinch the qualification both in the team as well as individual events. India last participated in an Olympics at Atlanta, where a three-member team — Limba Ram, Lalrem Sanga and Skuljung Dorjee — came a cropper. India failed to qualify for the Sydney Games.

The World championship is the key qualifying event for next year's Olympics as 86 of the 128 berths will be decided in New York.

The Indian team, which has been having a competition-cum-training schedule since the beginning of this year, was decided based on the performance of the archers at four circuit meets held at Pune, Kolkata (2) and Meerut.

In between the team went to Europe to participate in competitions and surprisingly only one of the four men could make it to the final team for the World meet. This led to the sacking of the South Korean coach Lim.

Former International Sanjeeva Singh was put in charge after the fourth circuit meet held at Meerut on June 22 and 23.

The men's team comprising three seasoned campaigners, Satyadev Prasad of Uttar Pradesh, Limba Ram of Rajasthan and Ved Kumar of Ordnance Factories, will be joined by 18-year-old first-timer Tarundeep Rai of Army Sports Institute.

On the distaff side, two veterans, Dola Banerjee of Jharkhand and Chakrevolu Swuro of Nagaland, will team up with two new faces, Reena Kumari of Jharkhand and Bhagyabati Chanu of Manipur.

At Meerut, Tarundeep Rai and Dola topped the ranking with Ved Kumar and Reena Kumari taking the second spots. Satyadev Prasad, individual Olympic round winner of the first two circuit meets at Pune and Kolkata, finished third and third leg winner at Kolkata, Limba Ram, took the fourth spot in the men's side. Bhagyabati ended third and Chakrevolu fourth in the women's section.

Dola tasted a rare defeat in the FITA round at Meerut at the hands of fast improving Reena but avenged the loss by beating her Tata Academy teammate in the Olympic round final.

The most heartening piece of news was the peaking of Rai and Reena at the right moment. The two had finished 16th in the first meet at Pune. At the end of the second, Rai improved to sixth and Reena occupied the third place. In the third meet, Rai kept his sixth rank while Reena jumped to second. In the fourth, Rai took the top spot and Reena retained her second slot.

The eight Indians will be among a record 580 archers from 81 countries competing in the biannual World meet. Among the top draw attractions are three Olympic gold medallists, two from South Korea, Yun Mi Jin and Jang Young Ho and one from the host nation, Richard `Butch' Johnson.
