By Our Staff Reporter

Mannargudi July 8. A. Srinivasa Iyengar, known as "Estate Iyengar", passed away at the age of 96 this morning at his residence at Mannargudi in Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu. He is survived by five sons and six daughters.

Mr. Iyengar, a senior citizen of the composite Thanjavur district, was known for his philanthropy, humanism and adherence to values. He was the founder of the Annaswamy Iyengar Veda Patashala, named after his father, which has been teaching the Vedas to students in the last 92 years. He was closely associated with the Paramacharya of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam and conducted `Vidwad Sadas' every year.

A strong supporter of the cooperative movement, he was the founder- member of the Thanjavur Marketing Committee, the Thanjavur Cooperative Marketing Federation and worked with V.S. Thiyagaraja Mudaliar of Arooran Sugars. He represented Thanjavur `mirasdhars' in the opening of the Mettur dam in 1934. An art lover and protector of ancient icons, he was private member of the Thanjavur Art Gallery, which preserved the icons of the Chola period. When the Government wanted to send a Chola icon "RishabaVahanadevar" abroad for exhibition, he objected to it on grounds of safety.
