Talking to newsmen here, Mr.Karunanidhi, however, expressed apprehension whether the State Government would follow the directive. "So far the Government has not taken any concrete step in that direction". Referring to the court's observation that the strike was illegal, Mr.Karunanidhi said there was nothing wrong in going on strike if it was for a good cause. Even dharna was illegal, but leaders such as Gandhi, Periyar and Anna resorted to it for public good, knowing well that it was not legal. On the statement made earlier in the day by the State BJP president, C.P.Radhakrishnan, that the DMK was moving towards the Congress, Mr.Karunanidhi said he would comment only if such remarks were made by leaders such as Vajpayee, L.K.Advani and Venkaiah Naidu. On the Congress demand that the DMK should quit the National Democratic Alliance, Mr. Karunanidhi said it was its opinion. Any decision in this regard would be taken only after consulting the general and executive councils of the party. On the BJP comment on Sonia Gandhi's origin, he said the party never made it an issue in the past and would not do so in future. On the performance of the NDA Government, Mr. Karunanidhi said though it was not satisfactory, it did not cause dissatisfaction. Till now, the Government had stuck to the common agenda and if it moved away from it, then the DMK would not remain in the NDA. Mr. Karunanidhi said the party was always for providing reservation for women in legislatures. The party would welcome a consensus among parties on reservation for BCs and SCs within the present quota. The party would launch a major agitation against the arrest of leaders under the Prevention of Terrorism Act in the State after consulting the general and executive councils. Mr. Karunanidhi said there was neither any improvement nor setback in the health of the Union Minister, Murasoli Maran.
