Tamil Nadu
By Our Special Correspondent
Answering questions on possibilities of a "new front" emerging in Tamil Nadu, he said there was no change in the BJP stand. As long as the DMK remained part of the NDA, the question of the AIADMK coming into the alliance would not arise. There might be some changes and it was only the DMK, which had raised doubts to the effect that realignments were possible. After the 12th Lok Sabha was dissolved in 1999, the BJP had not shared a political platform with the AIADMK. If any impression had been created that the two parties were coming closer, it was because of the DMK, which shared a dais with the Congress and the CPI (M). Hence any question on possible realignments should be addressed only to the DMK. Answering a question, Mr. Radhakrishnan described as `ridiculous' the DMK statement that there was no NDA in the State and that it existed only at the national level. On the impasse arising out of the recent strike by government employees, the State BJP chief said the Tamil Nadu Government should with a motherly approach reinstate all dismissed staff. The employees associations fell victim to the ``plans of the communists'' in going on strike. As, among those removed from service innocent employees numbered more, the Government should provide one more opportunity for the sacked staff to work. The Government had announced benefits for the employees to the tune of Rs. 550 crores, said Mr. Radhakrishnan. Meanwhile, the all-India BJP secretary, L. Ganesan, in an open letter to the Chief Minister, a copy of which was released at the press conference, said, quoting press reports, that the Government had classified the employees into four categories those who instigated the strike, those who wilfully joined it, those who had no option except joining the stir and those who were not connected with the protest, but were still affected. The fourth category should be reinstated unconditionally, while the third and second groups should be taken back after getting explanation letters and letters of apology respectively. The instigators should also be reinstated after departmental action was taken against them, instead of awarding stringent punishment. An increment should be given to those who reported for duty during the recent strike. The BJP State general secretary, H. Raja, also said the dismissed employees should be taken back.
