Water for 2.2 lakh acres under Tungabhadra project

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR AUG. 7. The high-level (HLC) and low-level (LLC) irrigation systems of Tungabhadra project will get water for about 2.2 lakh acres in Andhra Pradesh this kharif season, according to the Engineer-in-Chief of Major Irrigation Department, Lavakusha Reddy. This was based on the present estimated realisation of about 154 tmcft of water in the project.

During his visit to Anantapur yesterday, he stated that the current water level in the Tungabhadra dam was better when compared to last year. The pro rata allocation to the HLC in Andhra Pradesh as per the present estimates would be 23 tmcft water. Of this 21 tmcft could be realised at the State border. While 19 tmcft could be utilised for irrigation, 2 tmcft could be left for drinking water purposes.

The Irrigation Advisory Board meeting of the district would be held here on August 13 to discuss the release of water to the ayacut under HLC and other systems. It was being planned to give water to about 1.7 lakh acres under the system, he said.

Regarding the LLC, he said the entire localised ayacut of 43,500 acres for kharif season would be given water. However, release of water to the K-C canal was not decided yet as the inflows to Tungabhadra river were very poor. Water for kharif cultivation under the canal was mainly based on river flows. The additional 10 tmcft from the dam was generally meant for rabi season. A decision on the release of water to the KC ayacut would be taken at a meeting to be held in the August-end.

Mr. Lavakusha Reddy stated that Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar reservoirs now had a deficit of about 500 tmcft of water. As the Alamatti and Narayanpur dams would require about 20 tmcft to reach full capacity, they were hopeful of getting floodwater to Srisailam with the next three to four floods into Karnataka dams.
