Govt. ready to hand over sick PSUs to workers

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Aug. 12. The Kerala Government is ready to hand over to workers the public sector units facing closure, the Industries Minister, P. K. Kunhalikutty, told the Assembly today.

Responding to a calling-attention motion by K. P. Rajendran (CPI), the Minister said the Government was ready to hold talks with workers on the subject, provided they were able to come up with practical proposals.

Mr. Kunhalikutty said the Government had formulated a Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) for public sector employees, taking into account the concerns of casual and temporary employees as well. The decision was preceded by discussions with employees in individual public sector units. Factory-level units of various unions had welcomed the scheme.

The Minister said the Government could not protect the PSUs facing closure. He identified the Kerala Soaps and Oils (KSO) Limited and Travancore Plywoods Limited as some of the units facing closure and said the Government would meet 25 per cent of the cost for implementing a social security cover for employees of these companies.
