Neena (not the patient's name) was suffering from pain around the right knee joint from the time she was 10. At 19, she noticed a swelling around the same area. The size of the swelling increased and Neena, who could not endure the pain any longer, consulted various doctors and was treated with painkillers but to no avail, the hospital authorities said. She was diagnosed as suffering from "abnormal blood vessels" at the level of the right knee joint. There was a high risk of the blood vessels breaking through the skin with the patient suffering immense blood loss. However, Neena was treated at the Trinity Hospital by a vascular interventional procedure "Embolisation'' wherein the "abnormal blood vessels" were closed permanently. "Embolisation" included injecting a liquid agent absolute alcohol. The whole procedure was done under local anaesthesia and the patient was fully conscious and there was no need for any surgery. Only a needle puncture was done, the hospital authorities added.
