Miscreants stoned houses and shops at Vazhuvadi, near Mavelikara. Reports said unidentified persons destroyed the flagposts of the BJP at Chettikulamgara. The hartal was almost total in Mavelikara and the neighbouring areas. Shops and business establishments remained closed. Vehicles, including two-wheelers, remained off the road. While the CPI(M) had called for a hartal in Mavelikara, the Kerala Dalit Panthers (KDP) had called for a hartal in Mavelikara and Chengannur taluks, to protest against the murder. The CPI(M) claimed that Shaiju was a party sympathiser while the KDP claimed he was its sympathiser. The CPI(M) accused the RSS to be behind the murder. However, RSS leaders denied the involvement of their workers in the murder.
