Students' stir disrupts engg. admission

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Aug. 25. Demanding a reduction in fees for the students admitted under the merit category in the self- financing engineering colleges, the pro-Left student organisations went on a Statewide agitation today.

The stir turned violent in some colleges. In Kochi, the police resorted to a mild lathicharge to chase away DYFI agitators who were staging a protest demonstration before the Rajagiri College of Engineering and Technology, Chittettukara, near Kakkanad.

The Trikkakara police said the agitators, numbering around 40, were chased away after they intruded onto the college campus. They were later arrested and released on bail.

Admission was on at the college when the DYFI activists gathered there to protest against the hike in fees. A few activists were hurt in the scuffle with the police.

The agitators regrouped in front of the college and staged a dharna there. They were removed by the police.

Students barged into the Baselius Engineering College at Nalanchira and the LBS Institute of Technology for Women, Poojappura, both in Thiruvananthapuram, and tried to disrupt their functioning. The police removed the striking students.

Nn most of the eight self-financing engineering colleges in Thiruvananthapuram, admission procedures were interrupted. In several colleges, the managements put off admission of students and collection of fees, apparently to avoid any confrontation with the student organisations.
