Hundreds of cashew workers, majority of them women, reported for work early this morning. Various trade unions, including the INTUC, had recently launched an agitation demanding the reopening of the factories. The KSCDC workers, who had remained jobless during the two-year period, had taken up jobs with private factories as a means of livelihood. However, these employers, through a system of commission processing, had allegedly denied the workers their due rights like the minimum wage, DA, holiday wages, PF and ESI benefits. A function got up to mark the reopening of the KSCDC factories was inaugurated by the KSCDC chairman, K. Gopinath, at the corporation's Kottiyam factory.
