Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
The Senior Superintendent of Police, Anandh Mohan, told newsmen at Mudaliarpet police station yesterday night that the police received information that the groups were planning to clash here over certain issues. The SSP gave the names of the nine as: Vimalraj from Wandiwash, K Velayudham, M. Murugan and M. Vinayakam (belonging to the Vimalraj group) and G. Anandhu, V. Sarangam, T. Suresh, P. Raja and G. Joseph (led by Anandhu). Mr. Anandh Mohan said while members of the Vimalraj group were held at the bus terminal, the other group was arrested after intercepting a bus in which it was coming to Pondicherry from Chunambed in Tamil Nadu. Police also seized a few more weapons from the residential premises, taken on monthly rent by Vimalraj group a few days ago at Ashok Nagar near here. He said Kutti Amman alias Ezhil and Baskar in whose house the Vimalraj group had been staying here for some days were at large.
`Introduce Goondas Act'
Meanwhile, the former superintendent of police and vice-president of the Retired Police Officers Association of Pondicherry, N. Natarajan, today reiterated his demand for the Goondas Act. The Sunday incident would make out a strong case for introduction of the Act in the Union Territory, he said. His association had already pleaded for such a legislation to give more teeth to law enforcement authority to deal with hardcore criminals, preferring Pondicherry as their hideout. He also referred to instances of `unauthorised distilleries' functioning in some parts of Pondicherry and said these could be curbed if there was a Goondas Act.
