Three farmers end life

Mysore Aug. 25. Three farmers committed suicide in Mandya district on Sunday night. In the first incident, Puttathayamma (53) of Umadahalli, near Mandya, ended her life following a legal notice issued to her to clear the loan. Puttathayamma was reported to have taken a loan of Rs. 1 lakh from financial institutions and cooperative societies to save the sugarcane crop. She had become dejected after the crops failed. In the second incident reported from Makavalli in K.R. Pet taluk, Jayarame Gowda (43) committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in his field. It is said that he had taken a loan of Rs. 1.2 lakh to drill borewells to save the standing crops. However, the borewells failed which reportedly drove him to end his life. A.J.Venkatesh (39) of Aravinakatte had availed of a loan of Rs. 1 lakh to save the standing crops and used the money to drill three borewells. He reportedly became desperate after they failed and decided to end his life.
