Contaminated water kills three in Chitradurga

By Our Staff Correspondent

CHITRADURGA Aug. 25. Three persons died and 20 fell sick after allegedly drinking contaminated water at Gowdigere village in Holalkere taluk of Chitradurga district on Monday. The deceased have been identified as Jayalakshmamma (37), Gangamma (65), and Thimmappa (45).

According to sources, 20 persons are being treated at hospitals at Holalkere and Hosadurga, and they are reported to be out of danger. "The exact reason for the tragedy is not known. There was a festival on Saturday in the village. People consumed `payasa' on Sunday night.

The dish was supposedly prepared on Saturday morning. Another reason could be that they consumed water from an abandoned well," an eyewitness told The Hindu.

"As soon as we learnt about the incident, we rushed to the spot," said M.A. Sadiq, Deputy Commissioner, who is camping with a team of officials and doctors at Gowdigere.

"The exact cause for the tragedy is not known. But it seems that drinking contaminated water could be the reason. We are looking into it," he said.
