Countrywide alert sounded

Mumbai Aug. 25. Maharashtra and neighbouring Gujarat were among the States put on high alert today with security being beefed up at airports and vital installations immediately after the blasts here. Police patrolling in communally-sensitive areas and places of worship across Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh has been intensified.

Special vigil was being maintained at airports and railway stations in Mumbai, West Bengal and in New Delhi.

In the metropolis, checks of vehicles were conducted at main exit points and on the highways connecting Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.

In Delhi, which is high on terrorists' strike list, additional police forces have been deployed in public places and random search of vehicles was conducted. An Ahmedabad report said the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, had asked the police to maintain vigil in sensitive areas, religious places and cinema halls.
