Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Staff Reporter
Vehicle checking and frisking operations were undertaken at all important junctions and sensitive areas in the city as soon as the news of Mumbai blasts reached here. As the blasts took place six days before the beginning of the Ganesh festival, the police beefed up security at all hyper-sensitive areas in and around Hyderabad and strengthened night patrolling. A surveillance was kept on all "suspicious characters and persons with criminal records'', the Additional Commissioner of Police (co-ordination), A.K. Khan, said. The men of City Security Wing, Special Branch and Intelligence were alerted. Stating that there was no need to panic, Mr. Khan appealed to people to pass on information immediately to the control room or the police station if any unclaimed object was found or persons moving under suspicious circumstances noticed. "We're in touch with the Mumbai police and closely monitoring the situation'', Mr. Khan said.
Red alert at Secretariat
Security cover has been increased for the Secretariat. As soon as the Mumbai news came out, a red alert was sounded on the premises and entry of visitors as also employees restricted. Within minutes, police contingents swung into action, checking the incoming and parked vehicles. Two-wheelers and their riders were also subjected to check-up. The Chief Security Officer, C. Yesuratnam, said they had activated the entire force consisting of about 60 during daytime and 40 during nights. As a further precaution, they had posted men in "mufti'' on all the roads abutting the Secretariat for keeping a watch on strangers and suspicious characters. "We are watching the premises with thousand eyes'', he added.
