Maudhany acquitted

By Our Staff Reporter

Coimbatore Aug. 27. R. Sadayandi, judge, Fast Track Court I, today quashed a lower court sentence and acquitted the Kerala-based People's Democratic Party leader, Abdul Nasser Maudhany, in a case of alleged assault on a sub-inspector.

According to the prosecution, Maudhany, who was an undertrial in the Coimbatore serial bomb blasts case, while being escorted to a magistrate court for remand extension on May 6, 1998, assaulted the sub-inspector, Jacob, on escort duty. The Race Course police registered a case under Section 353 of the IPC (preventing and assaulting a Government servant). Sarvamangala, judicial magistrate III, on December 4, 2002, sentenced Maudhany to two-year RI. He went in appeal in the Sessions Court and it was referred to the FTC I. The court observed that the charges had not been proved.
