Letters to the Editor
Sir, This is with reference to the Tamil Nadu Government's ban on animal slaughter. Animal slaughter may go against the principle of life itself. But many tribal and folk rituals have survived under the greater umbrella of Hinduism. Animal and bird sacrifice have been followed in many parts of the subcontinent for centuries. Of course, this alone does not justify allowing it to continue.
S. Murali,
Sir, The ban imposed by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, on animal sacrifice in temples, merits praise. This is perhaps the first time a State has imposed an official ban on the barbaric practice.
H. Narayanan,
Sir, The ban on the cruel practice is welcome. Any opposition to it in the rural pockets will disappear with time by means of persuasion and education.
S. Venkatachalam,
Sir, It is quite amusing to find the so-called rationalist parties such as the DMK and the CPI(M), not categorically opposing the practice of animal sacrifice in temples, saying it is an age-old custom.
N. Balakrishnan,
