West Bengal announces IT policy

By Our Staff Correspondent

KOLKATA SEPT. 26. The West Bengal Government today announced the revised information technology policy (IT Policy, 2003) to enhance software exports of the State and contribute 15 per cent of the country's IT revenue in 2010. The State Government has also decided to set up an exclusive IT promotion cell and advisory council for boosting the sector.

Announcing the policy, the State IT Minister, Manabendra Mukherjee, said, "It (the policy) aims to convert Bengal as the most attractive invest destination in IT in the long term.'' The principal secretary of the IT department was asked to supervise all investments in this sector worth over Rs. 5 crores.

In this regard, a high-power committee of secretaries under the Chief Secretary would be created to resolve issues related to departments other than IT.

Mr. Mukherjee said the new IT policy would complement the recently drafted information technology enabled services (ITES) policy of the State. Bengal was also pursuing an e-governance policy to network all gram panchayats and municipalities within the next three years.
