Bush stands by Israel

Washington Oct. 6. The U.S. President, George W. Bush, today defended Israel's attack on Syria after the Haifa blast saying Tel Aviv had a ``right to defend itself.''

``I made it very clear to the (Israeli) Prime Minister (Ariel Sharon), as I have consistently done, that Israel has a right to defend herself,'' Mr. Bush said here in his first direct interaction with the media after Israel's raid on an alleged jihadi camp in Syria. He confirmed that he did not criticise Mr. Sharon when he talked to him after the raid except to give general advice not to escalate the tension by any action. The Palestinian Authority must fight terror and must use whatever means necessary if there was to be a Palestinian state.
