The chain started from the railway station stretched up to the new bus stand, a distance of three kilometres. The participants raised slogans stating that the action was an attempt to muzzle the press and to stifle the voice of dissent. The partymen termed the Jayalalithaa Government as "anti-democratic" and called for its ouster. The PMK founder leader, S. Ramadoss, the DMK district secretary, K.Ponmudi, MLA, and others went along the human chain in an open jeep fitted with the public address system. After covering the entire distance, the leaders came back and joined the chain near the Gandhi statue. Those who participated included the former Minister, Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan, Vallal Peruman, the CJP MLA, S.S.Panneerselvam, and functionaries and cadres from the MDMK, the CPI(M), the CPI, the DPI and the Makkal Tamil Desam. The DMK men were wearing black shirts to signify that November 7 was a "black day" in the history of democracy. In Cuddalore, the chain was formed from the Thirupadiripuliyur railway station to the head post office. Those who participated in it included the DMK district secretary, M.R.K.Panneerselvam, Pugalendi, MLA, A.G.Rajendran, the Municipal Chairman, Pala.Thamaraikannan of the PMK, Dhanasekaran, the CPI(M) district secretary, Nedunchezhian of the Congress and others. At Chidambaram, Saravanan, MLA, presided over the human chain that was formed from the police station to Kanjithotti.
