The prison officials, who spent more time with the criminals, had to don the mantle of doctors and reform them through personal interaction. Each convict would have behind him a story, which led to his taking to crime. The officials would have to address these special circumstances. Mr. Lakshman was inaugurating the fifth batch of a one-month refresher course for prison and correctional officers at the Regional Institute of Correctional Administration (RICA) here. The prison officials should identify and facilitate development of special skills such as handicrafts in the prisoners.
