A.P. polls

Sir, — It is difficult to believe that the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu, wants early elections because naxalites are coming in the way of development work and the Opposition is playing politics of opportunism ( Nov. 15 ). Even a landslide for the TDP will not solve these problems. Its protestations notwithstanding, the TDP's proposal to seek a fresh mandate is to benefit from the expected sympathy vote for the Chief Minister who narrowly escaped an assassination bid in October.

Sir, — Politicians should not be allowed to fritter away public funds for their personal benefits in a situation where governments plead paucity of funds for development activities. The law should be amended taking away the right to go for early polls, except when the ruling party loses the confidence of the House.

Sir, — No shrewd politician can be expected not to capitalise on the sympathy factor. But the constitutional head of the state should be vested with enough powers to repudiate such proposals of political opportunism.

Sir, — The practice of contesting from two constituencies is a blessing in disguise for those who are not sure of their prospects. Either the EC should restrict the contest to one constituency or make the successful candidate bear the expenditure for the conduct of the by-poll for the seat he vacates. Alternatively, the runner-up should be declared elected from the seat.
